You know who you are…..those Masterpiece Theatre addicts, who were looking forward to the 3rd season of Downton Abbey that started in January. I admit I am enjoying the storyline immensely. The lush costumes, the wonderful characters, the settings and scenery and of course the brilliant actors all blend to create something the soothes the more gentile soul, the romantic side of Dukes and Earls, the duality of the servants clashing with the less than realistic world of the aristocracy that they serve, all with a coming of age story that grandly disrupts traditional high society.
I find it intriguing that I still do not know why the married women get breakfast in bed and the unmarried women do not. I also find it fascinating how the running of an expansive Earl’s estate, from the kitchen scullery maid, to the footman and the proper valet to the Earl, all have their proper position and jobs to hold fast too. It is made to appear very simple while the complex underpinnings of servant/master society takes a turn into a new part of history.
